If we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another.

University Parkway Church of Christ

About us

We are a small church serving our community in the name of Jesus Christ and we care about you and your loved ones. Our desire as a church is to offer any assistance we can toward your spiritual and personal growth. The University Parkway church family is made up of sinners saved by the grace of God and the blood of Jesus. We cling to our Savior as a ransomed people whose lives have been turned from selfishness to service by a single act that occurred centuries ago.

Who we are

We are the University Parkway church of Christ. Our mission is to “make disciples.” We believe Christ has called us to take our Christianity beyond these walls to those who need it most.

For a more specific overview of our mission and the church’s various activities you are invited to explore this website, meet with our minister, or simply come and join us.

Our worship

You may find our worship services to be different in several ways. Beginning with a call to worship, we enter into a service of prayers, teaching relevant to our daily lives, and congregational “a cappella” singing of traditional hymns and spirituals. Our goal is for our guests and members to be led in praising God and encouraging one another in an inspirational way.

Each Sunday we share the Lord’s Supper to remind us of the sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross for our forgiveness and to celebrate his resurrection. All believers are invited to participate. Also, each Sunday we take a contribution of money to help support the ministry of this congregation. Everyone is welcome to give, but only those who are members here are expected to participate.

What we believe

The central focus of our faith and life is the God of the Old and New Testaments. God sent his only Son, Jesus, to live a sinless life on this earth and to pay for our sins by dying on the cross in our place. Then, he was raised from death to demonstrate the power of God over death. It is by the grace of God through Jesus Christ that we are saved. We believe there is no other name but Jesus by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12). This same God makes available to us his powerful, yet comforting, Holy Spirit.

All people must decide for themselves whether or not they believe the story of Jesus and are willing to put their complete trust in him. Our Christian faith focuses on, and responds to, Jesus Christ and what he has done to save us by means of his life, death, burial, and resurrection. An integral part of that faith response is baptism by immersion for the forgiveness of sins and to receive the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38). Baptism is a public declaration of one’s faith in God and the beginning point for one’s newness of life in Jesus Christ.

As a church, we believe we are the body of Christ in this community. As this body, we are dedicated to imitating Jesus collectively and in our individual daily lives. We are empowered by the Holy Spirit to make a difference in every area of our lives. We gather as a church to praise God, to encourage one another and to share the good news of Jesus Christ!

We learn about Jesus and God’s love for humanity primarily from the Bible. We believe the Bible is the inspired word of God and is to be used for instruction, encouragement, and training (II Timothy 3:16-17). The Bible is God’s authoritative revelation of his will for us. The Bible is our primary resource. Jesus is our Savior and model.

How do I become a member of this church?

All who are looking for a place to grow and learn about God and his loving redemption in Jesus Christ are welcome to our fellowship.

If you would like to become a part of the University Parkway church family, please read the explanation of What we believe, above. This statement embodies the essentials of what our leaders believe the Bible teaches about the Christian faith.

Then, come and visit us. Pick up a welcome brochure in the lobby of our auditorium, complete the response card on the back of it and give it to our minister any time during the Sunday morning assembly. If you prefer, you may bring it to the front of the auditorium during the song following the sermon, or put it in the collection plate.

If you would like to talk to someone about your faith, or about any questions that you may have, please contact us or speak to our minister or any of our members when you visit us. We are eager to get to know you better, answer your questions the best we can, and encourage you in every possible way. Welcome!

Directions to our building

Our building is located at 530 West University Parkway in Baltimore, a couple of blocks up from The Johns Hopkins University Homewood (main) campus. Click for Google map.

The building is within walking distance of parts of the Hampden and Roland Park neighborhoods. It is about a twenty-five minute walk from Union Memorial Hospital or from Loyola College In Maryland.

If you are driving from I-695, the "Baltimore Beltway," take I-83 SOUTH and exit onto Cold Spring Lane EAST, from which point we are about a mile and a half away. Turn RIGHT onto Roland Avenue. At the fork in the road, veer left and continue on West University Parkway. Our building is on the left, just as the greenway ends.

Our building is convenient to MTA bus service. From downtown Baltimore or the Inner Harbor, our building is less than five miles away via MTA bus #61. If you are coming east from Mondawmin, the zoo, or Hampden, or coming west from Hopkins Bayview, Patterson Park, or Charles Village, take MTA bus #22.

If you are driving from downtown Baltimore, take either Calvert Street or Charles Street NORTH. Continue straight through several major intersections including North Avenue and 25th Street. About two blocks beyond 33rd Street you will turn LEFT onto West University Parkway. After the traffic light for San Martin Drive - West 39th Street, watch for our building on the right, just before the greenway begins.

Our meeting times

Sundays, 10 a.m., Bible classes
Sundays, 11 a.m., Worship
Wednesdays, 7:00 p.m., Bible classes

Our Bible classes

Sunday morning classes meet at 10 a.m. and include a class for CHILDREN, a Bible study for ADULTS, and our TEENS and TWEENS class especially for young people aged 10 to 16, focusing on the life of Jesus.

In our Adult Bible Class on Sunday mornings we are using the book Jesus on Leadership by C. Gene Wilkes (Wheaton: Tyndale, 1998). Whether you lead by serving the church, by encouraging people, by managing workers, by raising children, by teaching students, by the influency you have in the way you talk to people - whatever you do, the leadership style of Jesus is the model for true success.

On Wednesday nights we are using a study guide entitled Understanding "The Church." The WestArk church of Christ in Fort Smith, Arkansas offers this 13-lesson study guide (and many other writings) for free downloading and copying. We have copies of this study guide available for your use. Or, you may find it more convenient to read or download the study guide here. "The purpose of this series," according to its author, David W. Chadwell, "is to challenge us to examine our concepts of the church from scripture."

Additionally, some of the brothers meet at the church building to talk about issues of interest to Christian men on the first and third Tuesday of each month, and there is currently discussion about establishing a regular schedule for women's fellowship times as well.

For specific dates and more details about our activities and our fellowship, be sure to check our News & Notes page.

We encourage you to download the Bible or individual books of the Bible from our site, or use the BibleGateway form below to look up a word or passage in the Bible.
